2. Key Concerns in Lâm Gia Huấn’s Artistic Practice

Lâm Gia Huấn’s works create a quiet dialogue between traditional fine art and contemporary visual language. Rather than simply depicting landscapes, he distills moments where personal memories intersect with familiar places, where people and local culture naturally meet.

This can be clearly felt in “Chưa về”, where Lâm Gia Huấn selects familiar details to construct an evocative space. The image of a young woman holding a child, bare feet beside a fan, and delicate blades of grass are placed together like intact fragments of a fleeting moment. The warm, muted palette and restrained composition create a profound sense of stillness, while the fragmented imagery opens up numerous associations with people, places, longing, and waiting. Rather than guiding the viewer through a specific narrative, “Chưa về” leaves enough space for each person to connect the work with their own experiences and perceptions.

It is this desire to preserve moments of stillness and emotional depth that has shaped the artist’s choice of materials. In his search for a personal visual language, Lâm Gia Huấn holds a deep appreciation for materials that have long been associated with Vietnam’s artistic heritage. Silk occupies a central place in his practice, offering a gentle dimension through which observations of landscapes, memories, and everyday life can unfold into imagery. Throughout his artistic journey, Huấn continues to explore the intersection between Vietnamese traditional art and contemporary visual language.

II. Lâm Gia Huấn and Memories on Silk – From Material to Artwork

1. The Harmony Between Silk and His Artistic Philosophy

Silk possesses a gentle and delicate quality while retaining colour with remarkable durability. Its natural surface creates a distinctive translucency, allowing light to pass through individual threads and producing an almost floating visual effect. Painting on silk requires considerable patience, involving the layering of numerous thin washes of colour. Water and pigments gradually seep into each individual fibre, while repeated processes of smoothing and refining the silk help reveal the most delicate tonal variations.

This harmony creates a smooth, refined surface where forms seem to float gently, perfectly complementing the quiet inner world and unhurried rhythm of Lâm Gia Huấn’s artistic practice.

2. Female Figures in Lâm Gia Huấn’s Paintings

The female figure moves beyond the role of an ordinary subject of observation to become a strong structure within Lâm Gia Huấn’s memories. In its introduction to the artist’s works, Annam Gallery offers a thoughtful reflection: In this quiet space, people, culture, and spiritual life gently find their place together. Inspired by childhood memories and the waterways of the Mekong region, female faces emerge in a state of serenity. Through layers of delicate silk and subdued colours, these figures celebrate the roots of life, gentle beauty, and enduring values that transcend time.

3. Memories Through “Chưa về”, “Nội quang” and “Đợi chờ”

A profound understanding of silk as a medium is particularly evident in the trilogy of works Chưa về, Nội quang, and Đợi chờ. Here, Lâm Gia Huấn fully embraces silk’s ability to absorb colour, patiently building layer upon layer of pigment. The silk gradually absorbs warm, muted tones, allowing visual depth to unfold with remarkable softness. Rather than defining figures through sharp outlines, the artist allows the female figures to gradually dissolve into the texture of the silk, blending into a unified whole.
Each work carries its own character while collectively celebrating the quiet beauty of femininity:

“Nội Quang / Inner Light” (2026) | Lâm Gia Huấn

Nội quang: The work focuses on the inner spiritual strength that lies beneath the surface. Through warm strokes of colour, the artist illuminates the radiance of inner beauty, emphasising stillness and contemplative depth.

“Chưa về” (2025) | Lâm Gia Huấn

Chưa về: The work captures an elusive moment suspended in time. The figure of a woman holding a baby blends into the hazy surroundings, evoking a gentle sense of longing and a profound yearning for a peaceful place to return to.

“Đợi chờ” (2025) | Lâm Gia Huấn

Đợi chờ: The slow rhythm of time becomes visible through every thread of silk. The scene transforms into a gentle realm where patience and tenderness emerge as enduring values.
By fully embracing the physical qualities of silk, the artist transforms familiar settings into spaces that hold emotion, where images appear as naturally as a breath. Through these three remarkable works, silk confirms its central role in Lâm Gia Huấn’s artistic journey. Each approach to the surface continues to reveal new possibilities for visual expression, reflecting an ever-evolving search for a visual language that unfolds with quiet fluidity throughout his practice.

Here, the artists had opportunities to engage more deeply with local life through intimate encounters with local artisans. Anmira Hội An became a gentle retreat where experiences could settle and resonate, preparing them to be transformed into works of art.

2. From Experience to New Works

Careful observations of weathered architecture, finely crafted handicrafts, local people, and the rhythms of everyday life quickly became starting points for a new series of works. Lâm Gia Huấn approached the destination through a keen and distinctly personal gaze. Every sound, ray of light, and rhythm of daily life was carefully observed and distilled into a valuable reservoir of lived experience.

The impressions gathered throughout the residency were later transformed through the visual language that has become familiar within his practice. Going beyond simply documenting the physical surroundings, he allowed his experiences to mature freely, blending them with his own aesthetic sensibility until images naturally emerged on the surface of the canvas. Hội An enters his works through a fresh and deeply personal perspective.
